"the Granada kids helped me get over my Spanish shyness" - Rachel Tomilson

Spanish through Leadership, the reason to speak Spanish is all around you!

The Nicaragua Summer Exchange recognizes the single most important component of speaking Spanish and living in a foreign community is the ability to build trust.  By reaching out to participate in the community, we are trusting in local people! Connecting Spanish to a real community is a life-empowering experience!

Our afternoon community service, "Spanish through Leadership", is focused on fostering friendships based on mutual respect in accordance with local culture and community values.

You may be teaching soccer skills to barefoot boys, or assisting an elementary teacher who has limited resources, or sharing your creative talents with a after school art project! Our community service benefits the needs of local children and youth. We participate on an equal basis, sharing and learning from each other! The youth of Nicaragua want to learn from you, as much as you want to learn from them.

In a short time you will discover how good it feels to be an American in the Americas.

Stepping into culture and community is fun and exciting, your meeting new people and making new friends. You feel part of something bigger,  because you are! Learning Spanish is more than academics, its an opportunity to belong to a growing community of Americans.  It may sound simple, but making friends has the power to change your world and theirs.

The "Spanish through Leadership" afternoon youth service incorporates approximately 60- hours of community service. Students completing the program receive our Community Service and Language Immersion Certificate Award.
